…”And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil”. All commentaries I looked into concerning this, focused on God not being a tempter and looked at different options, such as ‘testings’ and ‘trials’. Personally, I think that Jesus is giving us a pre-emptive strategy. Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be “tempted by the devil” (Matthew 4:1) It was still fresh in His memory when He gave this prayer. He knew what was coming when Peter was “sifted like wheat” by the devil.(Luke 22:31) He was there when Job’s life unfolded. Jesus gave Peter the heads-up and I believe we have been given one too. James 1:4 tells us that everyone is led into temptation by our own desires, just like Peter wanting to stay safe. What is His strategy? “but I have prayed for you,(Peter) that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:32) He has delivered us from evil, once and for all, and He lives forever to” intercede with God” on our behalf. (Hebrews7:25) Peter was given an assurance that his faith would not fail. He will always be my Deliverer because when I fail, and I fail often, my faith in Him doesn’t.He encourages me and makes me think about what I CAN ask the Father to lead me into. I know that it will be something wonderful.
